About Us

Dick Elmer's Furniture Superstore is a family owned and run retail furniture business. The company was started in 1956 by Dick Elmer. After completing an apprenticeship as a turner at Walkers in Maryborough, Dick decided to go into business for himself.

Always good with his hands, Dick chose furniture as his livelihood, making the furniture from scrap materials and selling it from his home. He soon opened his first furniture retail store in Rocky Street, Maryborough, which coincided with the launch of a local television station. Aware of what impact the station would have, he became one of the first, and easily the biggest local advertiser with the station. Dick Elmer was an entrepreneur ahead of his time, whose zany and offbeat television ads and promotional gimmicks were as much a fixture in the Wide Bay and Fraser Coast areas as the news and weather.

The business has survived the test of time, through the constant ebbs and flows of the economy, so you can depend on the reputation of this locally owned retail furniture store. The Maryborough store has traded from Rocky Street for more than 50 years, always offering the advantage of same day delivery because of the huge range of floor stock. During that time, other branches of the store have opened and closed in various locations in Hervey Bay and Bundaberg. The business currently also has a store in Hervey Bay at 92 Beach Road Pialba, which was opened in April 2006.

Over the years, various members of Dick Elmer's family, including sons and daughters, and grandchildren, have worked in the business. Dick passed away in May 2007, and the business is still owned by his wife Denise, and is currently being managed by their daughter Susan and her husband Geoff Gehrke. Susan and Geoff and their loyal staff pride themselves on giving personal, friendly service to their customers - following on the traditions set over Dick's 50 years in business, serving the people of Wide Bay in supplying and delivering quality furniture to their homes.
